With thanks to a keen-eyed visitor to this blog who identified one of the previous Hidden Book Treasures as a 1942-44 Haig Austerity Poppy (see said post HERE), this little gem of a film also revealed itself.
The first of May welcomes the arrival of Beltane and a Bank Holiday weekend in England.
Across the Malvern Hills this is marked by the annual custom of the Dressing of the Wells. Across this pocket of hilly land, which straddles the border of Herefordshire and Worcestershire, you can currently see colourful bursts of decoration adorning the fresh water springs which Malvern is famous for. Open to anyone with an interest, local agencies and individuals apply to decorate a well of their choice to a theme announced by the organising body, Malvern Spa Association. This year's theme being, 'The Tree of Life'.
To complement this year's Dressing, the Hills' carpet of bluebells has kindly obliged by coming into their full, purple-hazed glory for the occasion. Happy May Day!

On seeing this photobooth strip one was immediately put in mind of a short story by F Scott Fitzgerald called, 'Bernice Bobs her Hair'. The story, published in the Saturday Evening Post in 1920, follows the tale of Bernice, who goes from the girl who nobody wants to dance with to popular society Miss by threatening to bob her hair. There is a fabulous revenge scene in it involving scissors and a pair of prized plaits!

These photo's were most likely taken in the decade following the publication of the story. Sadly, there are no clues on the reverse to enlighten us.
This pale blue envelope and the card contained within it are a striking example of a small piece of British greetings card history. With a design evocative of the period, the card and envelope were produced by a company called Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd, which established in London in 1866.

<strike></strike>In brief, Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd became best known for the quality of their art postcards and greetings cards, spanning a period of almost 100 years. They played a part in establishing the custom, and boom, of exchanging decorative cards, the popularity of which was begun by the Victorians. They were granted the Royal Warrant of Appointment by Queen Victoria in 1883. Sadly severe bomb damage to their headquarters during the Blitz in 1940 meant that their archive of original artwork, including the work of many leading decorative artists of the day, was destroyed. The card shown here pre-dates that loss. The company managed to rise from the ashes but not in quite the same vein.
If you'd like to know more about Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd you'll find a comprehensive history and further examples of their cards on the Tuck DB website HERE. Examples of Tuck's cards are relatively easy to find popping up on Ebay and flea markets costing pennies to several pounds.
As you walk through Oxford University Museum of Natural History don't forget to look up and admire the carvings which head all of those respectable marble columns. Each column is made from a different British marble and each is topped with it's own unique corbel carved by Victorian stonemasons, John and James O'Shea, based on plants from Oxford's Botanical Gardens in the 1850's.
Drawing near to the entrance of the Pitt Rivers Collection you'll find the column pictured here. Peeping from those finely carved ferns are a tribe of sweet-faced, scaly headed beasts. Take a look and decide - are they armadillo or pangolin?
Passed a group of travellers the other day who had set up home in their horse box in the middle of a busy roundabout. A far cry from the jolly primness of the vintage corral set up at last year's Much Marcle Steam Fair, but no less interesting. Sadly, there was no opportunity to take a photo of aforementioned horse box camp.
This week on a short trip to the Scottish borders curiosity was piqued by a rather plain, yellow poster advertising the current 'Joan Eardley; A Life in Painting' exhibition at Gracefield Arts Centre in Dumfries. What a hidden gem this exhibition turned out to be!

Although born in England, Joan Eardley (1921-1963) became known for her work created whilst living in Glasgow and in the fishing village of Catterline near Aberdeen. Eardley is now considered to be one of the most influential Scottish artists of her generation. If you're not already familiar with her work, click HERE to see a slideshow of her paintings.

The Gracefield exhibition, drawn largely from it's own collection of Eardley acquisitions, has an impressive array of work on display from her dramatic, wave-spewing landscapes at Catterline to her colourful, mixed media pieces depicting children from Glasgow's tenement slums in all their tatty haired and sooty fingered magnificence. Although the work is plentiful, you get a particular sense of it being allowed space to breathe in the upstairs gallery which is dominated by her landscape work.

The exhibition is further enhanced by the black & white portraits taken of Eardley by her friend and photographer, Audrey Walker and a room dedicated to the work of artists who were influential to, or influenced by, Eardley. In this room you will also find several paintngs by another friend of Eardley's, fellow Scottish artist Margot Sandeman. An unexpected and welcome pleasure.

Two additional treats are a short black & white film of the artist at work and the chance to handle one of her sketchbooks. The film footage was taken from a longer documentary made by the BBC in the 1950's covering the work of contemporary Scottish artists. You get a super snapshot of Eardley drawing with pastels at lightening quick speed to capture a local child who continues to fidget and beam to camera throughout.
Although unable to share that particular piece of film with you, here is an alternative clip about Eardley from a 2010 episode of the BBC's Coast series

If you are in the Dumfries area we'd thoroughly recommend a visit to the exhibition which continues until 24th August 2013 between 10am-5pm daily.

Encountered this nineteenth century oil painting yesterday. It's a detailed study for a much larger painting involving a grand landscape which is all black & damnation reds, very dramatic. However, the bull's stance in this smaller study was more appealing due to it's amusing pantomime quality. As though the back's not quite sure what the front's up to...
This is the first time a 'fit for purpose' bookmark has made it's way into the Serge & Tweed 'Hidden Book Treasure' category. Whilst it's not terribly unusual to discover a bookmark hidden within the pages of an old book, you will no doubt be familiar with those place-stamped leather tongues wedged and testing the tenacity of a book's binding, however, the context and decoration of this book mark was worthy of sharing.
It was found nestled in a large collection of old childrens books once belonging to a young girl named Marion. The books were mostly from the early 1930's and had been very well cared for; paper covers intact & almost as bright as the day they were bought. The condition of the book mark reflects this care. The book it fell from was an almost perfect, early edition of, 'The Fairy Caravan' by Beatrix Potter. Just one of a whole box full of chilldren's literature delights, carefully chosen for a fledgling library.

A Collins Classics edition of Grimms' Fairy Tales from the late 1930's. Not anything very much to look at, infact the cloth cover is quite tatty, yet the quirky personal inscription inside and the colour plates appealed enough to see cash being exchanged for it.

The Giver-of-the-gift has seen fit to give a book of fairy tales to mark a happy anniversary. Romantic, yes possibly. However, to the contemporary eye, the sentiment in the inscription could appear a little less so due to his choice of address and wording.
In conjunction with the Museum of British Folklore, the Whitechapel Gallery in London is planning to host an archive display of the 1951, 'Black Eyes & Lemonade' exhibition, exploring Barbara Jones' approach to curating popular art. Although details are presently scant on the websites of both organisations involved, it's whispered that the exhibition is due to open next month, 9th March, and there's another chance to see the fireplace in the shape of an Airedale dog!

Husband & wife team, Newman & Thelma Meader, specialed in taking photographs on pleasure steamers sailing from Great Yarmouth's harbour during the late 1950's - 1960's. The pleasure steamers they worked on included the Eastern Princess and the Golden Galleon, the latter being the name peeping from the bottom right of the photo above. The photographs would have been taken and processed during the duration of the trip so that you could buy a photographic momento of your cruise at the end of the trip.

Hopefully the cobweb free, sunnier disposition won't alarm you too much?
To kick off 2013 here's the latest treasure to fall from a book; a small, postcard sized pencil drawing which reads, 'Ancient Earthwork - Maidun Castle, Dorset.'.
Such a charming drawing, made all the more so by the misspelling of 'Maiden' and the evident pressure of concentration which was applied to the paper whilst it was being drawn. It was hidden inside the pages of an early 20th Century copy of Lorna Doone - a classroom edition by the look of it's cover. Spotted with damp and with a split and badly frayed spine, the picture survived, a little yellowed, but crisp and intact.
For those of you unfamiliar with Maiden Castle it is one of the largest, Iron Age fortresses to survive in Britain with an impressive series of ramparts. Rather than go into any more detail here let me direct you to a short piece of film presented by archaeologist, Neil Oliver, for the BBC's Coast series in 2008, which gives you a bird's eye view of the real thing...
Fitting that this photo' should fall out of a dust-jacketed, 1963 edition of The Observer's Book of Horses and Ponies' by R.S Summerhays. Presumably the author was picked for his talent as a writer and not just for his name...
From the pages of a very tatty, damp-spoiled edition of a Readers Digest Gardening Encyclopaedia, came this unexpected troop of kanagaroos. Looking like an idealised tableaux from an early Ladybird book, there's even a giraffe in the background and boy wearing shorts. One of whom is probably called Peter...
