Spencer's English Garden

Really looking forward to seeing the current 'Stanley Spencer and the English Garden' exhibition at Compton Verney (which runs until 2nd October 2011).
I believe this is the first time such a collection of Spencer paintings have been presented together. In later life Spencer dismissed these paintings by saying he made them purely for financial purposes, favouring his more overtly religious pieces as being worthier. However, the attention to detail in these abundantly green garden paintings can be seen as raising nature (in a domestic setting) to something just as spiritual perhaps?
