Dressing of the Wells
The first of May welcomes the arrival of Beltane and a Bank Holiday weekend in England.
Across the Malvern Hills this is marked by the annual custom of the Dressing of the Wells. Across this pocket of hilly land, which straddles the border of Herefordshire and Worcestershire, you can currently see colourful bursts of decoration adorning the fresh water springs which Malvern is famous for. Open to anyone with an interest, local agencies and individuals apply to decorate a well of their choice to a theme announced by the organising body, Malvern Spa Association. This year's theme being, 'The Tree of Life'.
To complement this year's Dressing, the Hills' carpet of bluebells has kindly obliged by coming into their full, purple-hazed glory for the occasion. Happy May Day!
