Hidden Book Treasure No 6: Have You Still Got Your Beard?

It was delightful to find this envelope hiding in a very old, tatty edition of Odhams Encyclopedia for Children. It is covered in small pencil drawings of tumbling-locked women. Inside was a piece of foolscap with what looks like typing practice on it:
"Have you still got your beard now that you are in sunny climes? If not, I do hope that you will grow it back again before you return so that I will recognise you."
It's dated 15th December 1943...

What a fantastic find! Brilliant! I have a habit of borrowing old and obscure books from the library, and recently got a copy of Paul Nash's autobiography 'Outline' (which I thoroughly recommend) - it hadn't been lent since 1969, and there was a bus ticket trapped between the pages, dating from September of that year...

Fantastic - did you keep it? I'll keep an eye out for the Nash book. Saw some fabulous Nash paintings at the weekend at The Hepworth Wakefield accompanied by some rather lovely alabaster sculptures by John Skeaping. I was in heaven!
How did I miss this post?! What an amazing find - if only we knew the story behind it. That is certainly a hidden treasure.
